SUMMARY:Working Artists Forum announces Talbot250 art exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Shorelines of Time: Celebrating Talbot250\, a community-centered art exhibition\, explores the landscapes\, livelihoods\, and stories that define life on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Viewers are invited to experience Talbot County through the eyes of local artists\, whose works reflect the region’s rich heritage and natural beauty. The exhibition opens May 2 and runs through June 28 at The Market at Dover Station\, 500 Dover Road in Easton. A reception will be held on May 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. \nAs part of this Talbot250 event\, a paper quilt made by the public will also be on display at Dover Station. Several hundred members of the community have written a few lines about their connection to Talbot County on individual quilt pieces. They have been assembled into a large quilt by members of the Working Artists Forum.  Visitors to Dover Station can help create a second\, smaller Talbot Paper Quilt on May 2 from 12 noon to 2 p.m.

SUMMARY:Works by Little-Known Composers and Little-Known Works by Well-Known Composers
DESCRIPTION:Many remarkable composers never became widely known\, yet left behind music that is inventive\, beautiful\, and full of personality. At the same time\, even the most famous composers—Ravel\, Strauss\, Saint‑Saëns\, Beethoven\, Mozart\, Tchaikovsky\, and others—created works that remain overshadowed by their greatest hits. \nIn this course\, Muphen introduces us to both: the striking music of lesser‑known composers such as Marina Dranishnikova\, James Hook\, Ferdinand Ries\, Friedrick Gulda\, and Caspar Cassadó\, and the overlooked gems tucked inside the catalogs of the great masters. Together\, these works reveal a richer\, more surprising classical landscape than the standard repertoire suggests. \nWe will hear all of these — and more!

SUMMARY:The Modern Papacy
DESCRIPTION:After the enthusiastic response to last fall’s History of the Papacy\, Raymond returns with a focused look at the last two centuries\, a period marked by dramatic transformation both within the Church and across the world. \nIn the 19th century\, the Papacy weathered the French Revolution\, the imprisonment of popes\, the rise of Ultramontanism\, the industrial revolution\, the spread of socialism\, Bismarck’s Kulturkampf\, the loss of the Papal States\, and the controversy surrounding papal infallibility—all while navigating a tense relationship with the new Kingdom of Italy. \nIn the 20th century\, the Papacy sought to clarify its position on emerging social‑justice issues and adopted a more international approach to its teaching. It was unable to prevent or redirect the course of the world wars\, and large parts of Europe came under communist control. Vatican II attempted to rejuvenate the Church\, though not without intense internal conflict. The Papacy’s stance on artificial birth control and its mishandling of sexual‑abuse cases caused significant grief and loss of credibility. The century closed with financial scandals and the theological debates surrounding liberation theology.

SUMMARY:Sharing Wisdom Well
DESCRIPTION:Many people reach a stage of life where they want to give back by supporting others— former colleagues\, family members\, friends\, or mentees— but aren’t always sure how to be most helpful. This course is designed for people who already bring experience\, perspective\, and good intentions\, but want a bit more skill and structure in their mentoring conversations. It is equally well suited for those who feel ready to mentor\, but would appreciate some guidance in getting started. \nThis practical\, interactive workshop focuses on the elements that make mentoring truly effective: listening with intention\, asking thoughtful questions\, clarifying goals\, adding structure to conversations\, and offering feedback in ways that are both supportive and useful. You’ll have opportunities to practice these skills with peers and reflect on how to apply them in real‑life relationships. \nWhether you are mentoring former colleagues\, family members\, friends\, or volunteering as a mentor in formal programs\, this course helps you use your wisdom in ways that genuinely support others.

SUMMARY:The Blue Catfish Dilemma: Threat or Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Introduced to the Virginia end of the Chesapeake Bay in the 1970s\, the Blue Catfish is now considered an invasive species\, rapidly expanding through Maryland’s rivers and outcompeting native fish for food and habitat. \nThese highly adaptable predators feed on blue crab\, menhaden\, American eel\, and other economically and ecologically important species. They can now be found in most of Maryland’s tidal and non‑tidal rivers—and even throughout the Bay itself—where their broad diet and fast growth give them a significant advantage. \nAs their population continues to surge\, the spread of Blue Catfish has become a major concern for scientists\, watermen\, and fisheries managers. Their impact on native species of the Bay has sparked intense debate about how best to respond to this growing ecological challenge. \nWe have found two inspirational speakers for our June Lecture on the Shore event on the Blue Catfish dilemma. Dr. Noah Bressman from Salisbury University to speak on how this species got out of control and the impact this has had on the Bay\, and Nick Hargrove\, the waterman/entrepreneur from Tilghman Island who sees an opportunity in solving the problem. \nWhat to Expect: \nFor this Lecture on the Shore\, we are kicking off our first event at a new venue some might remember from Aspen Institute days\, the Temple B’Nai Israel off the Easton By-Pass. \nFor those selecting the Reception & Lecture option\, we’ll start the evening off with a reception with the presentors at 5:30pm. Expect to enjoy wines and hors d’oeuvres served up by Piazza Italian Market before taking reserved seats for the program from 6:30 to 8pm. \nFor those selecting the Lecture Only option\, your evening will start with the presentation at 6:30pm with a choice of attending IN PERSON or via LIVESTREAM. \nIn both cases\, we’ll finish up with a participative Q&A at the end from which you can draw your own conclusions: threat\, opportunity\, or both!
