Old Wye’s May Fair Celebrates 300 Years

A special May Fair will celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Old Wye Church (1721) with a wide variety of events and activities to which the public is warmly invited. The festivities will take place on the Church grounds in Wye Mills on Saturday, May 14 from 10am to 4pm.
Admission is free.
The celebration will feature a number of unique events including a May Pole dance for children around the live-flower and ribbon-bedecked May Pole. A horse-drawn wagon will carry Fair-goers on a round trip through Wye Mills with a stop at the old Grist Mill where there will be grinding demonstrations. Of interest to many will be the Revolutionary War themed events including a Fife and Drum Corps, a small encampment, musket and fire making demonstrations, and a presentation by the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard with a salute to the founders and major benefactors of Old Wye Church (1721).
Animals will be a part in this special day, so bring your pet for the Blessing of the Animals and visit the petting zoo featuring barnyard animals.
Children will find lots of games and activities such as face painting, flour sack races, corn-husk doll-making, and quill pen writing as well as popular games from years gone by such as shooting marbles, sticks and hoops, and whirly-gigs. A real Queenstown fire truck will be on site for boys and girls to explore.
Local artisans, including a bee-keeper with her local honey, a potter, wood-crafters, plus flower and plant vendors will join the festivities and sell their wares. The women of the Parish, well known for their pies and cakes, will provide a variety of baked goods. Gardening, cooking and gift books will be available at bargain prices.
Fair-goers will find lots of food to eat outdoors picnic-style or inside the Parish Hall – as well as some to take home for dinner. It wouldn’t be an Eastern Shore event without Fire Department BBQ Chicken (courtesy of the Hillsboro Fire Department) and a Fish Fry (catered by a 5th generation waterman family). Other items on the menu include Wye’s well-known chicken salad sandwiches, ham biscuits, hot dogs, and green salads.
Check the Church’s website (wyeparish.org) the week before the May Fair for the times of the May Pole dance, the Blessing of the Animals and other one-time events.
