Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Plans to Launch New Chapter in Talbot
The Colonel Tench Tilghman Chapter Maryland Society Sons of the American Revolution (MDSSAR or SAR) currently serves members and citizens in Maryland’s four mid-shore counties including Caroline, Queen Anne’s, Kent and Talbot County.
The chapter has been growing rapidly and is looking to divide into two chapters and launch a new chapter to serves members and citizens in Talbot and Caroline counties.
If one of our parents, grandparents or great grandparent was a member of the SAR of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) it is easy to become a member of the SAR. If not, you would need to trace your ancestry back five to seven generation to someone who was considered an American Patriot. If one of your ancestors served in the Continental Army, Navy or Marines or the militia the SAR considers them a patriot. But this is not the only way to qualify as a patriot. If you male ancestor signed an oath of fidelity or allegiance to the provisional government set up in each of the 13 colonies, you ancestor is considered a patriot. If you ancestor, male or female, paid the tax to support the revolutionary war or provided any type of material assistance to the cause your ancestors is considered a patriot. If any ancestor served as a doctor or nurse or as a government official in the provisional government they are considered a patriot. Most Americans with deep roots in the United States have multiple patriot ancestors but are not aware of this fact.
We have genealogists who can help you perform research to determine if you had a patriot ancestor that would enable you to become a member of the SAR. However, if not, we have begun an SAR Associates program for those individuals who have a passion for history and the principles upon which our country was founded as found in the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
If you interested in becoming a member of the SAR or SAR Associate, please send an email to Wesley Hagood, the President of the Colonel Tench Tilghman Chapter of the SAR at [email protected] by February 15, 2025.
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR), founded in 1889, is a non-profit and non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, serving our communities, and educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of our country.
